Devi (Goddess) is an exploration of the Sufi saying, ‘Death before you die.’ It’s about shedding our old self and having the courage to step into a new skin. This experimental dance drama piece is curated and directed by Joshinder Chaggar who also features in the show with Jaya Karan and Parvyn Singh.

Through their unique form of expression, each performer represents a specific Devi.

JOSHINDER CHAGGAR
Joshinder is an experimental, modern dance artist who plays Hari, a traveller on a treacherous journey of self-discovery, seeped in fear.

Joshinder has been dancing, choreographing and teaching dance since 2002. She worked for ten years in Karachi (2007 to 2017) as a dance artist & choreographer, in Theatre, TV & Film. Her work evolved when she joined the National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA) in Karachi to teach ‘Movement for actors’.
Her work is inspired by original stories & the desire to investigate the human mind.

JAYA KARAN
Jaya performs the classical Indian dance, Bharatnatyam in her portrayal of Kali, goddess of death. She shows us a very different face of death, one that loves and not to be feared but embraced.

With a background in Bollywood and Bharatanatyam (Indian Classical), Jaya has been managing, coordinating, choreographing, teaching, dancing, and performing for the past 20 years. She’s also a physiotherapist and passionate about the impact dance can have upon mental, physical and social wellbeing.

PARVYN SINGH
On vocals, live instruments (Taanpura & Sitar) and the loop peddle is Parvyn. She plays Jara, goddess of old age who explores the fruit of effort and experience about rising above a situation, gaining excellence and becoming your full potential.

Having shared the stage with Michael Jackson in Adelaide, the internationally acclaimed musician Parvyn began singing at a tender age of 5. She has toured internationally, performed at iconic stages such as WOMADelaide, California World Music Fest, Woodford Folk Festival and more.
