Footscray will come alive on Saturday with the vibrant 2018 Emerge in the West Street Festival celebrating diversity, community and the arts. Emerge in the West is a free family-friendly event showcasing emerging talent in music, dance, art, cultural food and storytelling and special offers from local traders.

Street Festival Program

Music
Come and witness some amazing music on the main stage from Blak Roots, Burundian Drummers, P-UniQue, GADDA and Saeed Abdullah’s East African Ensemble alongside The Senegambian Jazz Band; and drumming workshops throughout the afternoon.

Art
Sutueal Bekele and Magupela’s exhibition “Perspectives of Ideas” in Metro West’s Gallery.

Dance

The African Kitchen
The African Kitchen is a new partnership with the Village World Kitchen project. Cultural cooking demonstrations and storytelling with chefs and cooks from local African businesses. Discover and sample local delights, from traditional to contemporary and cross-cultural creations. Hear stories and anecdotes from these masters of craft and delve more deeply into the rich cultural history of food and food preparation. Chefs from Khartoum restaurant, Green Leaf Café and Teff Australia.

Kids Activities
Kids Activities inside Victoria University’s Metro West offering a range of activities including kids’ tribal jewellery workshops and face painting and up-cycled instrument making with a musical jam!

Cultural Walking Tour
Come and experience Footscray’s rich and diverse African cultures firsthand and up close, with this unique guided cultural walking tour. Your host Atakilty Woreita will take you on a short but action-packed walk around the Nicholson St and Irving St precincts to meet some of the local traders and taste some traditional foods from Sudan, Somalia and Ethiopia. Learn about African hair, beauty, dress making, bread making, henna, culture and much more.
Meet your hosts at 1pm sharp at Khartoum Centre African and Sudanese Restaurant at 145 Nicholson St, Footscray.

Circus and Drum
Circus and Drum workshops and performances with Circus Habesha and One Spirit Africa, throughout the afternoon, for all ages.
