Under the Facing Heaven archway in Chinatown Plaza, one dancer and three musicians take you on a journey that evokes fragments of forgotten stories from the surrounding laneways.
This new contemporary ritual performance expands on the long term collaboration between Janette Hoe (dance artist) and Ria Soemardjo (vocalist/musician), both Melbourne based artists whose performance work draws deeply from their personal connections to Chinese and Javanese ceremonial traditions.
Ron Reeves and Matt Stonehouse, both highly skilled percussionists grounded in Indonesian and Middle Eastern drumming traditions, create a mesmerizing soundscape inspired by the intricate rhythmic patterns of Javanese style frame drums.
Passionate about creating and sharing contemporary rituals that can transform our connection to place in the urban Australian context, this free performance takes place amongst the many activities of Melbourne’s vibrant Chinatown.
